Something New

A strong, smart, and independent African-American woman being portrayed with such grace on screen is something new indeed. Even though it's a small film, I really enjoyed its subject matter: intersectionality of class, race, gender, and sexuality. The issue of race of course is the head of this film and they tackled it with such boldness, intellect, and emotion. I was moved during some parts of the film, specifically the fight in the supermarket. It affected me because both characters were right and wrong so I couldn't really place myself in just one character's shoes. To put it more clearly, I'm a person of color and yet I'm not Black so it's kind of hard to take sides. You care about the two leads a lot because they're charming in their own way. They really do complete each other and it's nice to see their light and dark sides. In a society where race is still a big issue, this is an important film toward further understanding of each other.
