I'm slowly becoming obsessed with Martin Scorcesse's films. His movies have that certain grit that I look for, which automatically makes me want to give them at least a three stars. That's the mark of a great director. This film is an uncensored look in a man's life. All types of ugliness are shown in this movie so it has that down-to-earth, simple-yet-complex storyline. I love the boxing scenes--they're definitely one of the best boxing scenes I've ever seen. I can withstand a lot of violence but I must admit that this one made me flinch multiple times. It all looks very real because the camera is mostly focused on the boxers' faces. This film is never boring because some sort of confrontation is within each scene. The black-and-white classic look is also a plus. I wish more films were made like this one.
