Not Burton's Best but It's Delicious Enough

For a Tim Burton film, it's pretty good but it's no masterpiece. My favourite character turned out to be Toby (played by the newcomer Edward Sanders--which I'm going to look out for in the future because he reminds me so much of the always enchanting Freddie Highmore) because he managed to be really charismatic and I very much cared for him. I absolutely loved the look of the film--forlorn, bleak, and gothic-like. I thought Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter were born for their roles. My main problem is that, for a musical, the songs aren't that magneficient. At first, I thought that the "Joanna song" was very good but then it got stuck in my head and I desperately wanted to get rid of it. Still, its flaws don't outweigh the fact that this is a good movie. I also thought that this is a comedy--a dark musical comedy. The killings are darkly funny; even though I wanted to look away because of its graphic scenes, I wanted to laugh at the same time because something in my gut tickles every time the blade touches someone's throat. Go see it!

I completely agree with you on Joanna -- that song is still driving me nuts. A friend burned me the audio CD and I've gotta skip that track every time.
