Things We Lost in the Fire

Good Family Drama

I enjoyed this film quite a bit because of its acting and it dealt with the emotions with such honesty. Without Halle Berry, I think this would've turned out to be a typical drama about death and healing. The second half of the film wasn't as interesting because the whole drug addiction issue felt like an extra appendage that didn't need to be there. It only prolonged a would-be focused picture. I wish I would've seen more of David Duchovny. There was something about his character that made me want to get to know him. Even though his character had positive and negative qualities, I felt like I could relate to him, which was amazing because the character had a short amount of screen time. Lastly, I thought the realistic look of the movie was great. I felt like I could easily be there with them, may it be in the kitchen or the living room. Nothing feels forced so it felt organic and welcoming. If the second half was a bit shortened, it would have been more focused but I'm still recommending it because it's a small film that was ignored when "Oscar" pictures were coming out of the theaters.
