The beginning of this movie holds much promise as the viewer is placed in the midst of a crime scene. The problem with the Pledge is that:
1. the movie is about this "pledge" that occurs at the beginning of movie but it is rarely brought up again--if we are supposed to see the pledge as a torment to his psyche then it needs to be clearer. How does it pain him? Why did he make the pledge?
2. there is not enough character development. This movie is not about crime; this movie is about how a retired detective copes with his conscience. We need to know more about the characters quirks, his past, and more clues to his internal struggle since, in the end, this is what is important.
