It’s been unfortunate to see DreamWorks pull away from the things that made there early films great. They created smart films that were great for kids and adults thanks to such great imagination. But recently, they’ve chosen to go and follow the formula for any children’s movie. How To Train Your Dragon brings back the originality and imagination we want. I achieves much more, however, than just bringing back what we miss from DreamWorks. This is there UP. While retaining the charm we want, it goes in a different direction than Shrek or Bee Movie, This is the most mature film they have ever made.

It follows a pretty simple story, and one that can easily be transformed into a same old, same old, kids movie. A community of Vikings live to hunt the Dragons the terrorize their village, only to find out from the smallest Viking that there not what they think. The movie takes this premise and uses it as a guide to explore a boy’s relationship with nature.

The best part of the movie is it’s mature ending. I won’t state what happens, but I can tell you how proud I was to see the filmmakers give such a mature and low key ending to an animated movie. There was no sing-a-long or outtakes. Just a nice genuinely heartwarming moment.

This is definitely as lock for the best animated feature oscar, but I think it deserves more. I’ll be very happy to see it receive a best art direction nominee. Not only did they create a beautiful setting, the dragons themselves are fantastic. Each one has their own special elements to them, and this creates a special relationship with the audience and the creatures.

Upfront, How To Train Your Dragon will be viewed by kids as a film with the same jokes that they want. But, it can be looked into deeper and see a beautiful film about nature.
