Marie Antoinette (2006)

Let Them Eat Shoes

Marie Antoinette was the Original Material Girl (OMG!), a bizarre and beautiful cultural artifact of one of the most privileged societies ever, according to Sofia Coppola's film. Coppola's vision goes to great lengths to imply a similarity between Antoinette and the Power Consumer Paris-esque Party Chicks of the Roaring Twenty-Odds: a montage featuring shoes and candy, late night hook-up gossip, annoying little dog-rats.

If you worship Paris Hilton, you will fetishize this movie. If you believe Hilton will be publically decapitated during the coming revolution, you will wish Coppola spent more time chronicalling the economics of privilege and exploitation, namely Antoinette's role in bankrupting France, and less time masturbating to the princess life=style.

Yet the movie uncannily depicts the unmindfulness of the elite: even as the angry mob with pitch forks gathers outside Antoinette's palace, she remains ignorant of the social forces which have condemned her. Some will say "innocent." Let them eat cake.
