300 was a surprise hit in spring 2007 and immediately had a massive following of fans. I know many friends that love this movie and even hail it as one of the greatest ever made. Having seen this film twice now though i'm still not sure why so many people consider this film to be so great. Many critics hail its visual style as something impressive and while it occasionally proves interesting it never amazes me. The story is very loose and don't go looking for anything resembling facts. From what I can tell this film is a series of action sequences which more times than not tended to bore me. Thrown in between are speeches that while meant to be dramatic and inspiring leave me rolling my eyes.
It's not all bad but it certainly is nowhere near as good as everyone claims it is. Of course it would appear i'm in a minority for saying so. Perhaps it was my expectations that left me so disappointed but i'm thinking it's more likely that 300 really isn’t that good. It's the 'O this looks cool' mentality of filmmaking that does it in. All the effort went towards creating visually appealing environments and over-the-top action sequences that little time was spent on the story or character within it.
