I think that there might 2 options of why Buñuel made this film. 1. He understand the suffering that Jesus had, and makes fun of it because he disagree with the concept 2. He doesn't understand it, and makes fun of it because he doesn't actually knows what it means. Either way, and... whatever the reason is of why actually Buñuel made this movie, it's a true masterpiece that portrays in the character of a small country priest, what happened to Jesus. What we certainly do know is that the director totally disagree with several concepts from the church (specially from the catholic one) and he put all that, and condeses it in a powerfull film that shows how sometimes honest people suffers without deserving it, and even after making compasionate acts for others.
