East of Eden (1955)

Good steinbeck adaptation

A good film about the people in a town during world war two and the troubles involving a family that is rather biblical like. Although the film can be heavy handed in some scenes which is kind of Steinbeck's style but mostly it strives from that well. The different relationship in the movie are interesting especially between the father and the son and the biblical allegory works better then I thought it would. Although still some scenes do not work perfectly, the brother's transformation feels very unnatural, and some times the acting styles can conflict a little too much but all in all it is good.

Oscar nomination Best Actor James Dean 5/5- He sure is mannered but he also is very effective too. Although his constant looking at the ground and odd movements can sometimes conflict with the other actors who play it straight, the movement remain effective although somewhat strange. Most actors probably would not be able to get away with what he does but somehow he is able to pull it off as a fully satisfying character
