This is not really a film version of the Shakespeare play, but rather the play filmed. The set is just a large play set, and there is no music in the film. Although it does not utilize the are of film itself, it still is an interesting picture because the play of Othello itself is interesting. It is told as a play, and since it is written well it works. The acting is pretty strong from Frank Finlay, Maggie Smith, and Joyce Redman. Laurence Olivier performance is not his best Shakespearean performance, and his black make up is rather odd. Olivier is good but weird and theatrical. Although it is an odd performance it still works.
