In moviedom, there are some great pairings of director and composer. Bernard Herrmann scored many of Hitchcock's greatest movies and did right by them all, especially Vertigo and North by Northwest.

An even better pairing was Fellini and Rota. Nino Rota's best work was for Federico Fellini, who once said that he didn't really care for music. Rota, until he died, scored just about every Fellini movie. Many of the soundtracks are somewhat interchangeable: jumpy, peppy, Italian-flavored songs with some complex harmonies and unexpected twists and turns. All are addictive.

Fellini Casanova is one of Fellini's failures, but I think it is one of Rota's best achievements. I listen to it often on record, without the disadvantage of the movie. It's a bit more mysterious and dark than his other Fellini soundtracks. Highly recommended. (The soundtrack--not the movie.)
