Of Human Bondage (1934)

Mr. Gullible and Ms. Crass

The two lead characters are overdrawn, overplayed. Leslie Howard, as the character who is author Somerset Maugham's alterego, is too gullible, too forgiving, too desperate to pull at our heartstrings. Bette Davis, as the love interest who repeatedly shafts him, is too crass, too cold-blooded. It all makes for great fun, because we know what's coming and still are hoping against hope that this poor fool won't get hurt again.
