Simon and Nick, you really let me down

Ugh..
Let me start by saying that I am a huge fan of the Pegg/Frost combo. Shaun of the Dead is one of my fave movies, and Hot Fuzz ranks pretty high, too. That being said, I had really high hopes for this movie.
What I should have recognized as a red flag, I didn't even consider: this is an American "comedy," while the other two I mentioned are British comedies. The difference couldn't be more striking!
While Shaun and Fuzz are filled with brilliant sarcasm, wit and humor, Paul gives us the slop that gets eaten up in America. Low brow "humor," gay jokes, potty jokes, Christian bashing.. the type of "comedy" that has become the norm in the good 'ole US of A. Being written by two British guys, this shows us exactly how they view Americans- people who'll laugh at anything as long as they don't have to think too hard! I think I chuckled (not laughed) once. I seriously almost turned this movie off. It was boring. The jokes were juvenile. The anti-Christian message got really old, really fast. There were times I sat there wondering if this was an alien movie or an anti-God movie. I know Pegg and Frost are atheist and hey, to each their own, but this was just incessant and annoying. Featuring the obnoxious Jane Lynch and the un-funny Kristen Wiig.
I shudder to think what the "unrated" version had in store.
If you have a grown-up sense of humor, skip it. If you like to sit there like a vegetable and drool while you watch movies, by all means, check Paul out.
