Nature is One Real Mother

Long Weekend, like all great horror, feeds on man's deep-seated fears of the things he cannot control. Here, it's that malicious harridan known only as 'Mother Nature', who targets a bickering couple vacationing on a secluded beach for the long weekend with birds, snakes, spiders, and dugongs (don't ask) because the two keep killing the local wildlife to relieve their pent up marital frustrations. The situation, however, doesn't just provoke frenzy - though there certainly is a lot of that, especially by the third act - it also causes the couple to re-evaluate their marriage and some of their life choices. Imagine 'The Birds' meets 'Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf?'. It is a nasty little film with a sick sense of irony... and I love every tortuous second of it.
