The script is dumb under the delusion of cleverness, the twists are either incredibly obvious or impossible to deduce yourself, and the actors have already played these sorts of parts better (McKellen's role in particular feels like a rehash of his turn in 1998's Apt Pupil). This has all the makings of a dour Sunday afternoon thriller, but the considerable talents of these two giants of the British stage manage to make it a guilty pleasure, even if they're not bringing their A-game to it.
