Fanboys review
Daniel Corleone - wrote on 07/25/11
Fanboys are people that remain loyal to something, no matter how much it sucks. The movie consists of 4 male Fanboys (Hutch, Linus, Eric Bottler and Windows) and 1 female (Zoe). Its story revolves around the friendship of the Star Wars fanatics who had an idea to steal an early copy (or rough cut) of Star Wars Episode I – Phantom of the Menace by going to the Skywalker Ranch. Linus is dying with cancer and has a bitter relationship with one of his buddies Eric. Eric becomes more a salesman/career oriented unlike his friends who chat online to meet a girl (Windows) and who lives in his mother’s garage playing video games all day listening to Rush music (Hutch). The film is like a lighter version of the Hangover since its premise is to travel on the road to accomplish a mission as friends. Bottler finds a way to infiltrate the ranch to save his friendship with Linus. The adventure is filled with sometimes dull moments like in the gay bar where they were forced to pay $100 for a glass of water, they pay by stripping. They get high and an Ewok appears humping Hutch’s leg. The Fanboys disturb a group of Trekkies. After breaking in George Lucas’s ranch and office, they were tested if they were indeed “Fanboys” of the hit franchise. Charges have been dropped, Linus gets to see the film in advance, Zoe and Windows get together and the group stays close.
The cameos of Carrie Fisher, Billie Dee Williams, Kevin Smith, Ray Park, Seth Rogen and William Shatner were a treat. I feel this could have been effective with at least 1 popular actor to play one of the Fanboys, the ending improved, script was cleverly written and if there weren’t too many main characters. Some of the dialogue was too amateurish; wish resulted in some dragging moments. Kevin Smith could have lent a hand to make this better. If you weren’t a Star Wars fanatic, you wouldn’t get the jokes/trivia’s. Many references were used such as Thunder Cats, Back to the Future (Hutch in bed with the hooker), the van looked like the one in the A-Team, GI Joe and X-men shirt worn, and many more. This is a fun film to view especially with buddies or fellow geeks with the same interests. One of the quotes I will never forget were “It was a hundred miles ago, stop living in the past” and “what if the movie sucks?” The first quote embodies are capacity to move on from our past. Eric asks the question, after what they have been thru, just symbolizes expectations and being humane. It wasn't great, but it didn't disappoint either. This flick was enjoyable, but could have been so much better.
