"You gotta lay down the law, otherwise they're gonna make a fool out of you." After re-watching the movie it makes you appreciate the brilliance os the legendary director. The music example for the timeline duration of the film, detailed character development, camera shots gliding from various tight angles, the chosen artists and screenplay. Robert De Niro (Sam "Ace" Rothstein) and Sharon Stone (Ginger) portrayed their parts well, however, Joe Pesci (Nicky Santoro) shines in his supporting role. It was like watching a documentary than a film, nifty camera work and smart script.
Still, some elements (length, what happened to Sam's daughter and Nicky's son, etc.) seem to be missing to make this truly a classic like Taxi Driver or Goodfellas. The only thing memorable was the excessive violence and the depressing demise of Nicky. If your in a mood to watch gangsters in Vegas, then this flick is good to view. In the words of Ace - "In the casino, the cardinal rule is to keep them playing, and keep them coming back. The longer they play, the more they lose. In the end, we get it all." Some more good lines: Ace - "Do you see anything in these eyes that would let someone in your condition take my child away from me? You know that'll never happen." "Yeah, but I've been told before we're working it out." Nicky - "Matter of fact, nobody knew all the details. But it should have been perfect."
Surprisingly after seeing this again, it's like watching an improved version of Scarface with the thematic s of greed and power. It likewise touches on trust, friendship, parenting, favors and politics. One would be captivated despite its length and the characters, subplots were fairly entertaining. Giving this another try someday and it could be an underrated classic.
