The Big Lebowski review
Daniel Corleone - wrote on 10/05/11
Jeff “The Dude" Lebowski (Jeff Bridges) is an unemployed bowling fanatic who enjoys hanging out with his friends. A pair of goons rough up the Dude stating that his wife owes a man named Jackie Treehorn, The Dude is introduced to a millionaire also named Jeffrey Lebowski. The Dude meets “Big” Lebowski’s wife Bunny Lebowski (Tara Reid), who was later kidnapped for ransom. He asks his animated and intense friend Walter Sobchak (John Goodman), for help. The daughter of Big Lebowski, Maud (Julianne Moore), a porn starlet working for Jackie Treehorn has invited The Dude to get impregnated. He likewise discovers the reason for the ransom money with a few surprises along the way. Best lines: The Stranger – “The Dude abides. I don't know about you but I take comfort in that. It's good knowin' he's out there. The Dude. Takin' 'er easy for all us sinners. Shoosh. I sure hope he makes the finals.” Walter Sobchak - “A world of pain.” "Life does not stop and start at your convenience." Jeffrey "The Dude" Lebowski – “Well, sir, it's this rug I had. It really tied the room together.” "Just take it easy man." "Life goes on, man."
Brilliant even from the very start based on the peculiar but interesting plot. Has a killer soundtrack used and visuals especially in the dream sequence. Subjects that touch on decency, temper, life choices, friendship, sportsmanship and deception were depicted on the picture aside from its wicked humor. A load of likable characters with diverse personalities and motives made the mystery/dark comedy much livelier. Even the Stranger in the end was fun to watch, stating that The Dude was like a religious figure “taking it easy for all for the sinners.” In my opinion, this represents people being too uptight and worrying too much that leads to malicious acts. Timing of each comedic scene was impeccable and unforced. Jeff Bridges portrays an underrated comical performance that is rarely seen since he is so good with dramas.
The films legacy is untarnished from the cult following in LA back in 2000, the Lebowski Fest, the online religion Dudeism and numerous film related lists from fans and critics alike. The special 10th Anniversary edition is essential to every fanatic like myself, as it is an enormously enjoyable bonus disc on its own because of the number of wonderful features injected. The staying power of this magnificent picture is because of its memorable dialogue, universal themes, its notable characters and hilarity. We all one point in life want to be the carefree “Dude” who “abides” with everything that comes his way, be it positive or negative. The philosophy may or may have been meant, but The Big Lebowski certainly has made its indelible impact worldwide while remaining fresh.
