Drive review
Daniel Corleone - wrote on 11/04/11
A driver with no name (Ryan Gosling) falls for his neighbor Irene (Carey Mulligan), and together with her son, Benicio (Kaden Leos). The driver helps Irene’s husband Standard (Oscar Isaac) does a job since he owes money. Unfortunately, the money belongs to the East Coast Mafia and Bernie Rose (Albert Brooks) wants to get it back. The driver does everything he can to make things right. The sublime soundtrack, sensational cinematography and action sequences were perfectly executed. Unfortunately, I was not impressed with the mumbling of Gosling and lack of a deeper plot. Mulligan, Perlman were effective, Brooks playing an antagonist was surprising as well. It has a realistic approach however coupled with themes of trust, vengeance and survival is well displayed. Drive is an artistic film filled with images of love, despair, and gestures that makes you fully appreciate the director’s style but lacks substance in terms of the screenplay.
