The Awful Truth review
Daniel Corleone - wrote on 01/17/12
Jerry Warriner (Cary Grant) returns home from a trip to find his wife, Lucy (Irene Dunne), with another man on the way home. He discovers that she is with the good-looking music teacher, Armand Duvalle (Alexander D'Arcy) when the car broke down. Lucy moves with Aunt Patsy (Cecil Cunningham). Jerry and Lucy get a divorce while Aunt Patsy talks about relationships with her. Daniel Leeson (Ralph Bellamy) falls for Lucy and becomes close. Jerry goes out with heiress named Barbara Vance (Molly Lamont). A sister of Jerry, “Lola” crashes in a party of Barbara. Brilliant performances from the cast, notably Irene Dunne.
Screenplay was exceptional with the following lines: Jerry – “You can't have a happy married life if you're always suspicious. No. There can't be any doubts in marriage. Marriage is based on faith and if you've lost that, you've lost everything.” “The road we know is paved with suspicion.” Daniel – “Back on my ranch, I got a little red rooster and a little brown hen and they fight all the time too, but every once in a while they make up again and they're right friendly.” So many humorous moments such as Jerry falling of a chair, Lucy impersonates another person during the party, and more. This quote typically sums up the film: “Things are different, except in a different way.” The Awful Truth is a timeless multi-nominated comedy, which won Best Director (r Best Picture, Irene Dunne was nominated for Best Actress, Ralph Bellamy for Best Supporting Actor, and Viña Delmar for Best Adapted Screenplay), about marriage, personal differences, trust and relationships.
