The Virgin Spring review

Setting is during the medieval era in which a lady requests for a service from a God. Karin (Birgitta Pettersson) was raped and murdered while a servant named Ingeri (Gunnel Lindblom) watches in horror. Her father, Töre (Max von Sydow) and Märeta (Birgitta Valberg) becomes concerned about her whereabouts. A picture that epitomizes serious topics of evil, jealousy, morality, belief, vengeance, forgiveness and religion. The soundtrack was almost non-existent since it focused on the figures on the picture. "Poor mite, live out your miserable life as surely as God allows us to live our life," "God have mercy on me," I don't understand you," and "Only God can judge" are probably a few of the most powerful lines in the film, which relies mostly on the effective screenplay.

A parent can feel the pain of the unfortunate events and drama when the parents discovered the perpetrators. Nothing negative can be said about the performances and symbolism's (water which is purity and rebirth, fire as hell or for sinners) as well. The horror of losing a child, murder and sanity were touched. In my opinion, this was one of the director’s best creations in terms of cinema’s character analysis which was deservedly rewarded from various awards bodies including the academy Awards for best foreign picture. The intense purpose and impact of The Virgin Spring still exists today, crimes, loss of one’s innocence and question of our faith. All of which in one point in our lives, have encountered these thoughts and assumptions.
