The Fly (1986) review
Daniel Corleone - wrote on 11/05/12
A mixture of horror, sci-fi, romantic-drama-comdey elements all rolled into one. Second time viewing for this movie proves that its legacy will never become dated or dull. Seth Brundle (Jeff Goldblum) is a science who is working on something "that will change the world and human life as we know it." He meets a journalist named Veronica Quaife (Geena Davis). The score and direction brings to life the thrilling moments aside from the gory and effective effects/make-up. Engaging and most accessible from start to its suspenseful ending. Geena Davis was heart-wrenching and Goldblum just perfect for the role, physically and skill-wise. Screenplay was impressive with lines: Stathis - "It could be contagious. It could turn into an epidemic." Veronica - "Tests can't guarantee anything." Seth - "Most people would give anything to be turned into something else." "Insects...don't have politics. They're very brutal. No compassion, no compromise. We can't trust the insect. I'd like to become the first insect politician." In every film Cronenberg creates, there are always subtle metaphors based on the screenplay such as politics, aging, love, virus/sickness, abortion, effects of science, physical appearance, transformation and making an impact in society. The Fly is definitely for mature audiences who enjoy a really good sci-fi horror with a twist. One of the masterpieces from the talented and meticulous David Cronenberg.
