Life of Pi review

A moving, dark, humorous, beautiful, provocative, adventurous and addictive movie and definitely one of the best of the year. It will leave you thinking after viewing while not minding how the time went by. "Very few castaways can claim to have survived so long, and none in the company of an adult Bengal tiger. " A film which is similar to the Titanic, Cast Away and Avatar, but with a better plot/acting and sense of spirituality. The story revolves around an eccentric boy named Piscine Molitor who changes his name to Pi after being teased by schoolmates. Pi tells history to a writer looking for inspiration. From the opening scenes one can appreciate a really good masterpiece in the making. The simple "twist" is another welcome benefit and again make one wonder how spectacular storyteller the director is. One would be amazed at the animals behavior, immensely entertaining than the furry friend from Bringing Up Baby.
Performances were spotless and authentic, which keeps you glued all-throughout. The location just scenic and gorgeous coupled with the magnificent cinematography. Special effects were believable and the "sinking" sequence was grueling and lifelike. Score and soundtrack applicable to each scene and setting. The real strength f the film relies on the direction and screenplay with astounding lines from the protagonist: "Above all: don't lose hope." "I suppose in the end, the whole of life becomes an act of letting go, but what always hurts the most is not taking a moment to say goodbye." and "Doubt is useful, it keeps faith a living thing. After all, you cannot know the strength of your faith until it is tested." Overall, the whole production was faultless and engaging from the very first scene. Life of Pi maybe the Tree of Life of 2012, it could win accolades or not. Still, the fact remains that this is one of the most intellectual pictures created coupled with humane drama and effective humor which tackles on death, soul searching, religion, faith, nature's course, survival and hardships of life. It could be a cult classic, a surprise in the award bodies and is highly re-watchable.

Have to agree on all fronts. This is one of the few mainstream films to successfully combine amazing visuals and great storytelling, to create something with more depth and meaning. And it's subject matter can be interpreted differently depending on the individual. It's a feast for the eyes, the mind, and even the heart. Definitely one of the most underrated of the year.
