The Lady Eve review
Daniel Corleone - wrote on 06/15/13
Jean Harrington (Barbara Stanwyck) is a con artist trying to lure Charles Pike (Henry Fonda). Jean works with her father "Colonel" Handsome Harry Harrington (Charles Coburn) and his partner Gerald (Melville Cooper), Direction was solid, soundtrack lively and the performance of Stanwyck was exceptional. The wooden portrayal of Fonda was uninspiring and dull. The screenplay was impressive with lines: "Children don't respect their parents anymore." "That's the tragedy of the rich. They don't need anything." - Harry. "A man who couldn't forgive isn't a man." - Jean. The pace was smooth though some scenes felt prolonged especially when Jean confesses the truth to Charles. Dialogue was complex and unrealistic though it fit the film nicely. In conclusion, The Lady Eve is a good romantic comedy for its brilliant plot turns, charming portrayal of Barbara Stanwyck and loads of funny moments.
