Mary and Max review
Daniel Corleone - wrote on 09/18/13
"Despite achieving all his life's goals, Max still felt incomplete." Definitely one of the most intelligent animated black comedies this reviewer has seen. The film revolves around an Australian loner misfit named 8-year-old Mary Daisy Dinkle (Bethany Whitmore) and a mentally sick American Max Jerry Horowitz (Philip Seymour Hoffman). Starts of very funny then becomes darker in darker towards the fitting conclusion. So many memorable lines and funny moments. Some highlights were the detailed character development, lush soundtrack and very effective black humor. One of many provocative lines: "I do not understand why people break laws." "People often confuse me but I try not to let them worry me." "..her world was far from perfect." and "Although Max found solace in Mary, he still found the rest of the world bewildering." A minor flaw was its length and some idle scenes such as Mary's attempt for suicide or Max issue with his his illness. So many themes delved into such as loneliness, acceptance of ones self, depression, societies evils, dreams, death, troubled childhood, and most of all a real friendship.
