Review - There Will Be Blood (2007)

Daniel Plainview (Daniel Day-Lewis) was an oil driller in early 1900’s Texas. His story of family and fortune is told in “There Will Be Blood.”
If anybody told you this year that there’s just no such thing as good acting, you should take them to this movie. Day-Lewis has been winning Best Actor at almost every award ceremony and rightly deserves it every time. Paul Dano (as Paul and Eli Sunday) also gives a great performance with a much more, if anything, talkative role than “Little Miss Sunshine.”
The music really drew me in here. The first ten or so minutes of the movie has no dialogue, but every moment is gripping. The cinematography keeps you watching while the music almost makes you afraid to. Everything works together very well, giving the film an eerie yet real …

Extremely ambitious film that mostly succeeds

Most will agree that Daniel Day-Lewis is in the uppermost echelon of working actors today, if not the best. Unfortunately, he only appears every few years to appear in a film, so when he does it becomes a big deal. Couple his return to screens with the first Paul Thomas Anderson film since 2002’s underwhelming PUNCH DRUNK LOVE and THERE WILL BE BLOOD becomes a must-see sight unseen.
Day-Lewis is completely mesmerizing, keeping the viewer enthralled by his sheer determinism and terrifying demeanor. In certain scenes, he emits such a ferocity without words that is truly frightening. As such, the film carries a great deal of suspense, automatically sending viewers into winces and shivers when Day-Lewis turns his eye to madness. His brilliance is perhaps emphasized by Dano, who turns in …

An American Tale

To say that "There Will Be Blood" is a great film is perhaps an exaggeration, but only perhaps. To say that "There Will Be Blood" is the most exciting, kinetic, and visually staggering film of the year is perhaps a given, but again, only perhaps. Daniel Day-Lewis brilliantly guides us through an entirely American tale of capitalism that explores fatherhood, veers through religion, and ends up in a pool of blood (as far too many films have done this "Oscar season"). Yet most importantly, this is the violent movie of the season that actually feels relevant, that gets close to capturing that always elusive zeitgeist. Unlike "No Country for Old Men" or "Sweeney Todd," "There Will Be Blood" presses us to question both how we've gotten where we are and where exactly we're headed …

There Will Be Deafening Explosions

There Will Be Paul Dano as a preacher with as much enthusiasm as Tom Cruise in Magnolia. In moments, I felt that Paul Dano wasn't exactly with the program or the best actor. Then fast forward to twenty years later in the end. Everyone has aged except him. He is still a 20ish preacher, even though he is supposed to be 40. Couldn't they get a better makeup artist?
Daniel Day Lewis had great moments, but this is far from his greatest role ever. The children were great. P.T. Anderson is heading in a different direction to say the very least. There were surprise moments in the film. However, I really couldn't stand the jarring music. Using Ciaran Hinds was a waste of talent, because his character was never given a moment to shine. However, this film goes to show that he can pull off …
