Stagecoach aus dem Jahr 1939 markiert den Beginn zweier Karrieren. John Ford hatte bereits einen Namen als Western Spezialist, doch Stagecoach sollte der erste wahrhaft grosse Western in der Geschichte Hollywoods sein. John Wayne kannte man nur aus einigen B-Movies. The story revolves around Dallas (Claire Trevor), Doc Boone (Thomas Mitchell), Lucy Mallory (Louise Platt), stage driver Buck (Andy Devine), Marshal Curly Wilcox (George Bancroft) and Ringo Kid (John Wayne). The Apache scene was well choreographed and action packed. Splendid soundtrack, cinematography and locations. The acting and humor was solid though the plot could have been improved to make it more entertaining. Effective screenplay with valuable lines from Dallas: "Well, you gotta live no matter what happens." Henry, the Ringo Kid: "Well, there are some things a man just can't run away from." and Dr. Josiah Boone: "We're the victims of a foul disease called social prejudice, my child." A pioneer for its premise in action/comedy for a western, Stagecoach is a well-crafted film …

A stagecoach containing a disparate assortment of characters comes under Indian attack. John Ford revolutionized the genre with this beautifully crafted western and John Wayne was catapulted to stardom for his performance as the vengeance seeking gunfighter caught up in defending a group of strangers. But for me, the film is all about Thomas Mitchell as his preferred typecast of intellectual drunkard although it's one of many wonderful performances as the faultless cast represent a hugely likeable bunch and offer Ford an opportunity to highlight social prejudices. The message is to never judge a book by its cover as gunslingers can be honourable, "fallen women" can be thoughtful and considerate, drunks can be courageous and respected gentlemen can be crooks.
