Rocket Science

Rocket Science is about an underclassman who joins debate club after a pretentious and easy-to-hate girl named Ginny claims to see his potential, despite his speech impediment. Rocket Science is far better than I expected.
There is some typical quirky claptrap horse shit I would laugh at if I thought mildly ridiculous things weren't commonplace, but I am at least thankful this isn’t written by Diablo Cody. The writing feels genuine; genuine for Jersey, genuine for American kids in general. Several moments and characters are over-the-top, but why make a movie if you’re not going over the top? The least believable scenes are also the shortest. If the story is auto-fiction, and I have a feeling it might be in the cards, I would guess the unbelievable moments aren’t far from the …

A Different Awkward Small Comedy

This is a greatly uneven film but somehow it all works because adolescence is unpredictable. Reece Thompson did a great job portraying a heartbroken kid in search for his identity who also happens to stutter when he speaks (and he wishes to debate!). Even though he was full of angst, he wasn't emo (or annoying); he managed to stay charming and I did root for him from beginning to end. I must also commend Nicholas D'Agosto for picking up the story's pace whenever he appears on screen. The story turned somewhat slow deep into the story and he made it come to life. If one enjoys awkward or dry humour, this is the movie to watch. The only minor complaint I have is that I wish there were more debate scenes because I sensed a fire whenever characters start talking really fast. It's a small …
