A Bucket of Blood review

A former busboy Walter Paisley (Dick Miller) accidentally kills a cat and covered it with clay. His displayed work becomes popular after showing this to Leonard (Antony Carbone) and Carla (Barboura Morris). After accidentally killing an undercover cop named Lou Raby (Bert Convy) he then turns it into one of his masterpieces. The “Dead Cat” and “Murdered Man” were his earlier works and soon would follow. Not enough romantic depth for Walter to love Carla, the ending also seemed rushed due to budget constraints though it was engaging and funny from the beginning. It could have been better if the dialogues length was shorter and the suspenseful scenes longer. The infusion of dark comedy in this era was unexpected and the suspense done in good taste. Its score provided thrills …

I first saw Roger Corman's A Bucket of Blood a little over a year ago and it may surprise some people when I say that I legitimately love this movie, with absolutely no sarcasm or irony. Out of all the Corman films that I have seen (and altough I really like 'X', and love The Masque of the Red Death), this is one of my very favorites from him. It's a stark-black comedy/B-Horror film that is drenched in satire, and is a warped, but nevertheless truthful mirror pointing at the late-50s/early 60s culture, the art scene, and in some ways Corman's movies themselves.
