Dick Lester's 'uncommon film' as it was tagged, presumably to prepare audiences for its fractured narrative. On board are George C Scott, Julie Christie, Joseph Cotten as well as the Grateful Dead and Janis Joplin with Big Brother and The Holding Company. Christie is terrific but the real star is Nic Roeg's cinematography which make the streets of San Francisco look dazzling, even more so in this gleaming new print. Ostensibly the film is about the break up of a marriage but the bigger picture, circa 1968, is what interests Lester as anticipates the cultural war ahead. .

Petulia seemed like a very weak version of Darling to me (both with Julie Christie). I would opt for Darling instead of this film.
