I was really expecting this movie to be terrific. And, in some ways it was. But, in most ways it was just a little bit too ridiculous for me.

A bizarre, but multi-leveled fantasy that doesn't quite get a grasp on its main characters, but provides some fascinating images along the way. Final Grade: B

Boring, that's all I can say about this film. Gondry, who directed two great films before this (Dave Chapelle's Block Party and Eternal Sunshine and numerous awesome music videos) brought his cheap and easy style of special effects to the big screen. But I felt the pacing was off and the film became stagnant and stale. I found myself caring less and less about the characters and more about checking my watch to see how much longer I had to sit through it.

In some ways, this movie hits too close to home. But in other ways it's just a good film with great actors, Charlotte Gainsbourg and G. G. Bernal (CUTE!). And while it feels sometimes that this is more of a music video than an actual movie, it is much better to have a Gondry movie than no Gondry movie at all.
