The more I think about it, the more I liked "Targets".
How fun it was to see Boris Karloff playing a nice old man; how you might imagine him in real life. He brought a surprising amount of humor to his role as an aging horror actor well aware of the changing times and trying desperately to retire.
In a parallel story, a young family man prepares to go on an emotionless shooting spree, with only the hint of a cry for help as he tries to make some contact with his oblivious wife.
Their stories converge at a drive-in theater as "monsters" of two generations come face to face. This sequence is intense. And I found the atmosphere nostalgic rather than dated, even reading into it a comment about the rise and fall of the drive-in theater, which in turn perhaps represents the death …
