American History X review

“Hate is baggage.” The story revolves around brothers Derek Vinyard (Norton) and Daniel "Danny" Vinyard (Furlong). Viewing this again after several years of seeing this picture. A powerful realistic film about bad parenting, hatred, racism, society’s indignation's, brotherhood, family and reformation. Probably one of the best prison related flicks produced. Two stories within the story were well presented. Usage of black and white, flashbacks and slow-motion shots were effective. Screenplay was never pretentious with excellent lines: “Then everything gets complicated” – Derek, “Life’s too short to be pissed all the time” – Danny and “Has anything you’ve done made your life better?” – Dr. Sweeney. Norton displays one of his best acting while Furlong a …

"American History X" by Yojimbo

One of the ringleaders of a Nazi skinhead gang is imprisoned for the murder of a black car thief, but whilst cut off from his peers he begins to question all of the principles he has based his life upon. American history X is an extremely powerful examination of racial politics in contemporary America, seen from the standpoint of a High School boy who idolises his older brother, the afore-mentioned skin head. It shows how the seeds of racism can be sown through the seemingly innocuous comments of those who shape our young minds and how charismatic charlatans can exploit the disenfranchised for their own agenda by spouting superficially convincing sounding, pseudo-intellectual bullshit that seems to fill the void of their hope-free, hate fuelled lives. The cast are all extremely …

Racism Sucks!!

This movie is my favorite Racism based film.
This film clearly shows why racism can spread and why there will never be a cure for it.
Ed Norton is convincing as an ex-skin-head named Derek Vineyard who during his time in prison realizes that the racist propaganda he used to glorify is bullshit, because in prison there are no friends.
Well thats just the beginning of the movie, the rest of the movie is about his younger brother "Danny" played by Eddie Furlong being brain-washed and manipulated by the same propaganda and people that Derek used to follow.
This film is a must watch for everyone in this country. The message is an intense one.
The story is told through Danny via his History Essay Paper he has to turn in (hence the movie's title American History X).
I recommend it …

How do I love thee, Edward Norton? Let me count the ways...Another solid performance from a solid actor. It's really a pleasure to watch him on screen every single time. I can't say that he's absolutely brilliant, but he is so good. He's just got this thing....
As for the movie itself, I really liked it a lot, though I pretty much saw the ending coming. It was either gonna be big bro or little bro...so obvious. I liked how they dealt with race. I liked that they didn't make one race look like the victim to justify absolutely hating one side or feeling pity for the other. I liked that the anger and the violence and the hate was spread out equally as twisted as that may sound.
I feel like there were some holes. It was as though there was this amazing script but it was too long so …

Powerful and gripping film that stays intense!

Probably one of the most powerful films I have ever seen, with a subject matter that is so delicate and easily could have been mishandled – this film delivers a performance of a lifetime from Edward Norton and a superb story shaping the influences around him.
The film is told in two tales; one in black and white, conveying the wrongful doings of Derek Vinyard (Norton) and about how his racial crusades slowly infiltrate the mind of his little brother. After a brutal racially motivated murder of three individuals for breaking into his car, Derek is sent to jail where he soon learns the errors of his ways and comes to realise the pain and suffering he has caused.
The second story told in color, runs parallel to that of the past of Derek. This story focuses more on Danny Vinyard, and …
