The Box is an extended episode of Twilight Zone with a mainstream budget, the extra cash making the weirdness seem all the more subversive. The story (based on a Richard Matheson tale) is a Faustian pact with buttons on, but that's just the starting point as it picks up Sartre and a heady dose of spiritualism along the way. I thought it got lost a bit in the mid-section but it may just be that it was playing with your head and not giving too much thought to mundane concepts like exposition. Nice grading give the 70s setting authenticity, splendid costumes (brown was the new black then) and art direction, too. Good to see Richard Kelly back from the void, proving that Donnie Darko was no fluke.

This is one of the worst movies I've seen in quite a while. The story had a good premise, but got thrown around and simply doesn't work as the movie goes on. The acting is ok, but the writers really didn't know how to give it good flow, and tried to throw some sci-fi into it which made it absolutely terrible.

Press the play button and two things will happen. One, right in your head, your brain will die a little. And two, you will waste 2 hours on your life on a crappy movie. I was very skeptical about this movie. It seemed like it had a good idea. But I couldn't see them turning it into a 2 hour movie. The score was distracting, because it sounded like something you'd hear in "The Haunted Mansion". The story was just ridiculous and confusing. A guy comes to your house and gives you a button. Press the button and all hell breaks loose. The only thing I liked about this movie was Frank Langella, because he's awesome. But the special effects on his face were terrible. Overall, "The Box" was a ridiculous, confusing and over-acted film.

This is an idea in search of a film - but it never finds what its looking for - mystery - thriller - sci-fi - drama - it just can't settle on what it wants to be, and thus, fails at each. I know this was based on a short story (later adapted to a good Twilight Zone ep) but feature length? A mess.

Started out as a pretty intriguing mystery, then fell apart at the halfway mark once the sci-fi part of the story came into full view. It becomes such a mess for a good portion that I was confused at times. The ending picks it back up again and delivers a decent twist.

At the beginning, I thought it was pretty intresting. I didnt understand why critics said it was a bad movie. NOW I KNOW. After the first hour you're satisfied and think it's gonna end soon. Then, it turns into a jumble of crap that doesn't make sense. Random characters are thrown at you that have no point in the end or the basic plot for that matter.Overall, I'm pretty disappointed. 1.5/4

To me, this was interesting. I really liked the tension that it brought. It was downright scary. On the other hand the ending was left very open ended. Big mistake. Richard Kelly has serious talent. He can make things creepy, he can make things funny and he can pace a movie pretty well. Much like Southland Tales, this movie lacks explanation. I get most of it but it didn't hit home well with me. I feel like he will hit a home run again as the Talent is there but just not the whole package yet. If you like scary, intense flicks, check it out. If you are looking for Donnie Darko - don't rent it. You will hate Richard Kelly.

What starts as a suspenseful, interesting story ends up as a weird, sci-fi tale that frustrates more than entertains. The setup is intriguing enough, a couple struggling financially receive a box from a mysterious stranger, pushing it means someone will die and they get a million dollars. Of course, they push the button and then weird crap happens. The cast is engaging enough, particularly Frank Langella who's able to be mysterious enough with a character that's a little laughable. In the end, there's too many bizarre scenes that head toward a conclusion that's pretty unsatisfying.
