Entertaining, But Underwhelming Ending

JLFM - wrote on 04/12/2012

Hmmmm. There are action sequences, plenty of one liners, and Robert Downey Jr. I can only deduce that this is another Hollywood box office smash. And silly old me, I just saw the film. My friends pestered me about this for the longest time. They loved the film, and were positive I would too. I told them I'd get around to it, until finally one of my friends lent me the movie to watch.

My feelings about this unique film are a little mixed. The film wants to be clever, but very little smarts at all are needed to view this film. Naturally, this film is geared towards teenage boys, who for the most part, are not interested in an intellectually stimulating film. They just want to see Downey deliver witty lines, and watch him beat up thugs. So, if that's what you came to see, you will not …

"Sherlock Holmes" by Yojimbo

Holmes and Watson prevent the dastardly murder of an innocent girl during a satanic ritual, but when the would be murderer seems to come back from the grave the dynamic duo seem to have met their match....RockNRolla was a strong indication that the Ritchie formula was starting to wear a little thin, but the reinvention of Sherlock Holmes as a hard-drinking, bare knuckle brawling geezer was ringing some serious alarm bells with me (especially since the trailer made it look like Van Helsing 2). Thankfully, Robert Downey Jr. pulls out all the stops to make the character an infectious, eccentric cross between Doctor Who and Indiana Jones, and somehow it works brilliantly. He is perfectly complimented by Jude Law who shares great chemistry with his co-star making them a real Butch And …

Holms And Watson, Never Done Better

Director Guy Ritchie is known for his action films (‘Lock, Stock And Two Smoking Barrels’ and ‘RocknRolla’), so there’s no surprise that his take on this iconic fictional character would include some measure violence and mayhem. No - the surprises come from the complex characterizations, the historical setting, and infusion of the aforementioned action element into what still is an intellectual ‘Sherlock Holmes’. Ritchie has managed to execute a delicate balance between flying fists and perplexing puzzles in a film that also carries a fairly accurate backdrop of late 19th century London with a story line that demands the viewer’s attention.

Robert Downey Jr (‘Iron Man’, ‘The Soloist’, ‘Tropic Thunder’) plays the primary character, Holmes, to great effect. …

Sherlock Holmes review

Detective Sherlock Holmes (Robert Downey, Jr.) and partner and Dr. John Watson (Jude Law) try resolve cases involving Lord Henry Blackwood (Mark Strong). Blackwood plans on ruling the world. The film had a few unbelievable sequences such as Blackwood predicament on the chains and Holmes avoiding the explosions. Soundtrack was applicable and dialogues were fast to present the ingenuity of the main lead. This reviewer feels there was an excess in style and overloaded with too much action instead of slowly representing the facts on how Holmes was able to discover each revelation from Blackwood and his escape. The fancy action and effects were a given, the real challenge in this genre is how to make it engaging intellectually without impressing the audience. Sherlock Homes was like a …

Sherlock Holmes- A Great Movie

Remarkable, genuin, one in a kind!
Those are the words that the newspapers gave Sherlock Holmes. But what do the private man think. Is it a movie for americans. No, in fact, I don´t think so. It is a movie for europeans.

Scherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson is led into a mysterious crime. A dead man, some weird chemicals in his lab, and a strange device, that no one knows what it is. They keep on fiddling with the clues they have, and Sherlock starts to feel that he is getting somewhere with the case, and gets right in the middle of it.

"They have done a perfect replica of how London looked in the 1890´s. With all the brickstone walls and grey skies, it really gives the impression of a huge metropolitan. You get dragged in, and it really feels like if you were in the story for real, …

When I first heard there was going to be a Sherlock Holmes movie, I was like "Yeah, all right! Finally!". Then when I heard my favorite actor was the lead role, I was like "Yeah, even better!". Then when I heard it was an action movie, I was like "Wait, what? Sherlock Holmes an action star?". So needless to say I was skeptical. It didn't help that I hadn't seen any of Guy Ritchie's other movies. But in the end, I liked it. I though the blend of action and mystery was great. A lot of people didn't like this movie, but I'm a sucker for a good mystery plot. And you can't go wrong with a Hans Zimmer score. Robert Downey Jr. was great as Sherlock Holmes, and same with Jude Law as Watson. Overall, it was kind of gloomy and often hard to follow, but in the end it all comes together and leaves …

Worth Watching

Having read all Sherlock Holmes stories I will say that the Holmes in the movie is a lot more fun than the one in the book. This different take on Sherlock is appealing. His loyal friend and companion Dr.Watson also seems more intelligent and a better fighter.

The best thing about the movie is the action. Holmes's one on one duels with his opponents is very memorable and there are plenty of other good action sequences as well. There is also a good deal of humour(something which is rare in the books except for frequent sarcasms). But the story was a bit disappointing. Personally I feel 'black magic' stories are a bit outdated(and exasperating) for today's generation. Still this story does suit the time in which it is set(there was a lot more superstition back then). Although we are …

I felt that they didn't show the erudition of Holmes as much as they should have, instead of showing him being kick-ass.
the mystery of the movie was impossible to figure out.
The fight scenes were spastic. Could you tell me the point of showing him work out the move in slow motion only to show it really happening in fast motion two seconds latter? I think it would have been better if they should the planing, then when they went to it actually happening have it not resemble the planing in any way.
Although Jude Law was great I can't get used to him being Watson. He's to young and to skinny.
I'm pretty sure this movie could have been great had it not come out against Avatar ( no comparison on awesomeness scale) and if somebody else had directed it.

Holmes Delivers Punch, but No Knockout

Chris Kavan - wrote on 01/04/2010

Instead of relying on the tried and true origin story, this Sherlock Holmes starts off like it's always been around. One thing it isn't: boring. You have plenty of action, whether it's a bare-knuckle brawl or racing through an explosion at a butchers. There are very few down moments, and there is always a moment of humor or excitement just around the corner.

Yet for all the flash and visual wizardry, Sherlock Holmes is oddly forgettable - luckily they has the fortune to nab at a top-notch cast or this may have been a one-and-done. As it stands, it looks like this is most likely going to be the first in series.

I was never into Sherlock Holmes in either book or film. I have a general knowledge, but none of the details. I can see purists being outraged. This is not your classic …

Sherlock Holmes transforms to Victorian Steampunk

If you want a spectacle you’ve come to the right place. The cinematography is breath taking. The special fx are huge and done with taste. The performances are spot on. I would expect nothing less from Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law.

However, there are some things that do not sit well with me. I don’t like the personality flaws that this rendition of Sherlock Holmes has to offer. In between cases Holmes is a man who can’t cope with every day life and must be engaged in a case or he can’t function properly. In reverse Watson is far brighter and tougher than any other that has come down the pike before. The Watson upgrade is fine but, no need to take Holmes down a couple of notches.

I love Holmes for his intelligence, confidence and powers of deduction. It did seem …
