The Town review

I remember viewing this in theaters without any idea about the premise, and yet it delivered. Doug MacRay (Ben Affleck), James "Jem" Coughlin (Jeremy Renner), Albert "Gloansy" Magloan (Slaine), and Desmond "Dez" Elden (Owen Burke) are friends who rob a bank. Claire Keesey (Rebecca Hall), a bank manager who was held hostage, becomes close with Doug. A solid cast with sincere performances all around. Soundtrack, action sequences and direction was likewise wonderful. Screenplay was well written with some quotes from Stephen MacRay - "Making a change," either you got heat or you don't." Doug MacRay: "No matter how much you change, you still have to pay the price for the things you've done. So I got a long road. But I know I'll see you again - this side or the other." An effective …

Excellent Crime Drama!

Ben Affleck is Doug, the leader of a successful, accomplished bank robber crew composed of longtime friends who have operated as a group for some time. During one particular job, they grab a hostage Claire (Rebecca Hall) into the getaway truck just in case, but drop her off after they have shaken off police pursuit. Unfortunately she lives right in the neighborhood, hence a sufficiently significant risk for the gang to have Doug befriend her at a "chance meeting" to see if there is any danger that she might recognize one of them (despite their masks and her blindfold).
Predictably, a romance blossoms between Doug and Claire, but the gang's lethal member, Jeremy Renner, doesn't like it. And a tenacious FBI agent Jon Hamm draws closer to the boys' identities. He wants to bring the boys …

"The Town" by Yojimbo

A crew of professional thieves are threatened by the FBI agent pursuing them when he realises that the gang's mastermind has engaged in a relationship with a potential witness. I was extremely impressed with Ben Affleck's directorial debut Gone Baby Gone and was looking forward to this one immensely. This may have coloured my viewpoint slightly, but I found it a little bit of a let down. It's not that it's in any way bad; on the contrary, it's an extremely well engineered heist movie with a full compliment of solid performances, well written characters and dialogue. It's just missing that spark of originality and inspiration that made his previous film something special. It clearly takes a lot of cues from Heat, but the rather generic plot means it is a rather less layered and complex …

The Town review

The Town is Ben Affleck's second movie as a director. His first was Gone Baby Gone, a superb movie. He showed great promise as a director. Unlike in Gone Baby, he stars in this one. He plays Doug MacRay, the leader of a Boston bank robbing gang. In there last heist, Jem (Jeremy Renner) the most violent member of Doug crew, takes a bank manager Claire Keesey (Rebecca Hall) hostage. They let her go. Then they find out that she is from Charlestown, the place that they live. Jem things she might have seen something, and wants to find out how much she actually knows about the crime. Doug offers to do it instead. He fears that Jem will do more than just have a friendly chat with her.(he had good reason to think that).
But then he starts to fall for her. Things are getting even worse. An FBI …

Cliched script, but who cares?

The Town is a very clichéd screenplay. From the beginning of the movie there’s plot points that make us think that this might as well be the awful Takers. But there is one thing that saves it. Characters. Ben Affleck handles every character so well that you are completely taken into their lives and you don’t care that you’re following them through a recycled plot.
The Performances are great. Jeremy Renner gives the best performance I have seen of his career – yes, I liked him even better than I did in The Hurt Locker – despite that he’s playing another Clichéd element of the screenplay. Renner tones down the character and makes it feel so much more genuine. His performance is the base of all the other supporting characters, such as Blake Lively. Chris Cooper shows up …

Mr. Affleck, you are officially awesome!

Wow. I never thought I'd see myself saying "Ben Affleck is a phenomenal filmmaker." Ever since Gone Baby Gone from 2007, Affleck has been improving upon his long career. I don't think he's as bad of an actor as everyone claims he is, I actually quite like him. But as far as many professions go, I think writing and directing are his two strongest. And The Town proves this point as it an excellent heist film in the spirit of something like Heat or The Departed.
The Town focuses on Doug Macray, a career criminal who, along with his friend Jem, makes a living off robbing banks in Boston. After robbing a bank and taking its manager hostage, Macray gets involved with the woman and finds that he has feelings for her. She doesn't know this and Macray sees her as a way of getting out of this …

Great Movie

Nobody is clipping off Affleck's....This is probably Ben Affleck's best film--acting and directing. The Town is about a guy who makes his living robbing banks with his friends. However, things become complicated when he falls in love with the bank manager of his most recent heist. This is very similar to the movie Set It Off starring Jada Pinkett-Smith and Queen Latifah, except this has a rougher edge because it deals with four men instead of four women. Also, the characters in The Town are a little bit more resourceful which makes things a lot more interesting. This movie is packed with drama, action, and suspense. What makes this movie so great is that although Ben Affleck and his boys are lower-class thugs (for lack of a better term), they are brilliant at what they do.
The movie …

Ben Affleck's Town

So The Town is Ben Affleck's second attempt at direction and he does a fine job. He also does a fine job acting. Surprised? I was. The Town take a good look at the Boston streets and specific neighborhoods where Affleck himself is familiar with. I am not a Ben Affleck fan (and in fact usually stay away from any movies that he is in).
This movie is good. It is a solid crime thriller that will keep you on your feet and will keep you guessing. Affleck is a good guy/bad guy and Jeremy Renner is just plain bad. The story is a bout a smart bunch of dudes that do bank heists for a living. Affleck is the smart one of the group, trying to change his live.
The story is told pretty well. I felt like the Boston setting was real. The camera direction and cinematography was slightly above …
