Extra Terresial

"Paul" by Yojimbo

Two English comic book nerds on the road in the American mid west have a close encounter with a stranded alien and decide to help him evade capture by the sinister Men In Black who are pursuing him. The epic ongoing bromance between Simon Pegg and Nick Frost becomes an extra-terrestial menage-a-trois with the addition of Seth Rogen's chain smoking, smart mouthed E.T. in this amusing road movie from the Spaced school. Essentially a homage to John Carpenter's Starman with added dashes of Close Encounters and E.T., Paul has that easy going charm and feel good factor that most American nerd comedies completely miss; there's something much more likeable about a British geek for some reason (maybe it's just because I can relate...) Pegg and Frost play off each other as effortlessly as ever to …

A fun comedy for fans of comedy and sci-fi!

Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are two straight guys who take a long-awaited trip to San Diego for the Comic Con festival. On their way across the country, they encounter a foul-mouthed, smoking alien dude (voiced by Seth Rogan) named Paul who having been used by the government for knowledge (including advising Steven Spielberg on 'E.T') has outlived his usefulness and is looking to get back to his mothership.
Sci-fi fans will get a real kick out of this, as there are a number of references to sci-fi movies, both famous and obscure. With a secretive government official named Lorenzo Zoil (Jason Bateman) along with two other bumbling detectives hot on their tails, and the fanatical father of a young woman that they accidentally kidnap, 'Paul' maintains the laughs until the end, with plenty …

Ugh, I Wanted It to be Good

I really wanted to like this movie and I did enjoy parts of it, but, frankly, it isn't very good. The film's main downfall, in fact, is it's title character, portrayed by Seth Rogen as a vulgar, weed-smoking, often rude extraterrestrial. The thing is, making Rogen's Paul a type of every other character Rogen has played recently makes "Paul" "just another Seth Rogen movie," rather than the geek-fueled homage to sci-fi films it desperately wants to be. The film's best moments come from references to wonder-filled films such as "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" and "E.T." and Simon Pegg & Nick Frost do an admirable job of capturing the sort of childlike glee two comic book nerds might display upon meeting an actual alien. The R-rated humor feels forced in this film and actually …

Paul review

Tara’s dog got squashed by a spaceship of Paul. To geeks Graeme (sketch artist) and Clive (writer) meet Paul and embarks in a journey. Many extra terrestrial references such as Close Encounters of the 3rd kind (tone, ending and mountain), Star Wars (shirt/the memorabilia/soundtrack), E.T. (signal while waiting), X-files (Paul’s idea of Maulder),Mac & Me Aliens (Weaver) and of course, the director who does the best alien related flicks, Spielberg. Some quotes from the cool weed smoking alien: “Sometimes you just gotta roll the dice.” Graeme – “Just because your truth isn't the true truth, doesn't mean there is no truth, Ruth.” Soundtrack, cinematography and special effects were really good. Topics about science, faith, friendship and never quitting were symbolized on …

Simon and Nick, you really let me down

Ugh..
Let me start by saying that I am a huge fan of the Pegg/Frost combo. Shaun of the Dead is one of my fave movies, and Hot Fuzz ranks pretty high, too. That being said, I had really high hopes for this movie.
What I should have recognized as a red flag, I didn't even consider: this is an American "comedy," while the other two I mentioned are British comedies. The difference couldn't be more striking!
While Shaun and Fuzz are filled with brilliant sarcasm, wit and humor, Paul gives us the slop that gets eaten up in America. Low brow "humor," gay jokes, potty jokes, Christian bashing.. the type of "comedy" that has become the norm in the good 'ole US of A. Being written by two British guys, this shows us exactly how they view Americans- people who'll laugh at anything as long as …

A Truly Funny Geekfest of Entertainment!!!

Paul is a great & undeniably funny movie starring the comedic geniuses that are Simon Pegg & Nick Frost. The movie co-stars many popular comedic actors including Bill Hader, Jason Bateman, Kristen Wiig, Joe Lo Truglio, David Koechner & Blythe Danner. A comedy that stands out to Pegg & Frost's previous work, Paul is under the surface a road trip movie but with a brilliant twist of having an alien aboard. The special effects are, for a buddy comedy, shockingly good. The alien is very believable & the explosions are shockingly both well-done & well-filmed. What did shock me was the subplot of (SPOILER ALERT) Paul actually being the alien of the infamous Roswell incident that escaped & is now being hunted by the FBI. Blythe Danner was actually a little girl when Paul landed & was one of his …
