Mindless Fun

You know what the world needs? More pirates. At least Disney thinks so. And the funny thing is; they may be on to something. Ignoring the less than enjoyable At World's End, The Pirates of the Caribbean films haven't been half bad. What was once considered a terrible and sure-to-fail idea by many has turned into a relatively fun franchise. On Stranger Tides, the fourth entry in the Pirates series, continues dishing out the mindless and entertaining joy of its predecessors, if slightly less consistently than in the first two films.

Summarized as simply as possible, On Stranger Tides continues the misadventures of Pirate Captain Jack Sparrow. This time, Jack is on the search for the Fountain of Youth. Things are, of course, complicated, when Jack runs across an old love named Angelica …

"POTC: On Stranger Tides" by Yojimbo

Captain Jack Sparrow returns to join a race against the Spanish Royal Navy, the newly commissioned Captain Barbossa and Blackbeard to find the fountain of youth. The latest instalment of the most popular franchise of modern times contains all the crowd pleasing ingredients you'd expect, but somehow this latest incarnation manages to completely fail to capture the magic that made the original film so much fun. It's basically just like a piratized version of National Treasure with some Harry Potter hoodoo and supernatural beasties thrown in as it lumbers from one bloated, joyless set piece to the next. Even Johnny Depp never gets the chance to strut his stuff, being pretty much relegated as he is to weak quips and mincing between one special effects overload after another and seems more …

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides review

Joshamee Gibbs (Kevin McNally) in London, Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) is brought before King George II (Richard Griffiths). Jack meets his imposter and former lover Angelica (Penélope Cruz). Blackbeard (Ian McShane), who practices voodoo magic, is the father of Angelica. The antagonist was uninteresting and Penelope just couldn’t fill the shoes of Knightley’s Elizabeth. Screenplay was decent with one of my favorite lines from the picture is from Angelica – “Every soul can be saved.” Picture’s score was more dramatic because of the action but not enough to keep you engaged. The side story of the mermaid slows the plot of the film and nothing new to offer. In this reviewer’s observation, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is the weakest of the franchise.

A Toned-Down Pirates Only Average

As the original Pirates trilogy went along, it seemed that certain elements were put in just to make things as crazy as possible. In hindsight, it made the movies implausible, but, I admit, at the same time it also made them a lot of fun.

On Stranger Tides moves away from that element. Sure, you still have some of those elements: flesh-eating mermaids, rigging that comes to life with the wave of a sword but compared to the previous two films, this one seems much more grounded - which turns out to be its biggest strength and ultimately weakness.

The main problem with this Pirates is that is shows flashes of brilliance but shows far more mundane elements. While Ian McShane plays Blackbeard to gravelly-voiced brilliance, the addition of Penélope Cruz wasn't nearly as good. She has …
