A 2011 version of Rocky

Andrew - wrote on 08/11/2012

Warrior is film that grips the viewer from start until finish and does not let go. Some may accuse it of being formulaic, but it is a great story that stands up on its own. It is like a modern day version of Rocky, bringing contemporary issues to the fore. Warrior contains two parallel stories that collide near the end in an epic encounter, each one both heartbreaking and inspiring.

Tommy Riordan (Tom Hardy) is a U.S. Marine who has recently returned from Iraq. He visits his father Paddy (Nick Nolte) a recovering alcoholic and born-again Christian. Disgusted by his father's past behavior and believing that he has not changed, Tommy dismisses him and begins training in MMA at a local gym. After knocking out Mad Dog (Erik Apple) in 30 seconds at the gym, he asks his father to …

I want Tom Hardy's neck.

So, talk about going into a movie with low expectatons. I thought this would be one of the worst movies that I've ever seen. In fact, it's not. It was entertaining. Very, Very predictable, but entertaining none-the-less. Again prior to seeing this movie, I thought I'd be giving it 1 star, then afterwards, when I had all of that adrenaline running from the fights, I thought, this is at least a 3 star film, but now that I've had time to think about it, it's getting 2.5. It was good, but every sports movie cliche that you could have, it had. I mean, you knew that the brothers would fight in the end and I even guessed (as would any savvy movie watcher) who the Final Four were going to be. As for Nick Nolte, who was nominated for an Academy Award, quite honestly, I don't even know why …

Obvious Clichés and All…it left me in tears!

Two brothers competing against each other - Check

A father torn between his two sons at odds with each other - Check

Alcoholic trying to redeem himself and win his family's respect back - Check

Underdog trying to save his house and family, dreams of winning championship prize money - Check

On the surface, Warrior is about MMA and UFC fighting, but this takes a back seat to the gritty emotion of the dysfunctional relationship between father-sons and brother-brother.
The physically commanding Tom Hardy plays Tommy- an ex- Iraqi Marine who was a champion MMA (Mixed Martial Artist), trained by his father. With the build of a bulldog, (can’t wait to see him as the villain Bane alongside Christian Bale in The Dark Knight Rises) he has the personality of a champion - brooding, …

Tom Conlon returns home and joins a mixed martial arts event, approaches his father to train him. Brendan Conlon is a physics high school teacher who, when his mortgages stumblr, forced to get back on the world of MMA. These two brothers will fight for reasons.

Wow! Didn't expect this could be this good. Very good family story, and amazing action. Very moving and touching. This film is one of those films which made your heart skip a beat because of too much tension from all the actions, and felt warm because of the drama behind all those actions.

Brilliant execution too! Goosebumps came around when those marines give chants to Tommy. And yes, the final scene scored high, ending a movie with a touching and moving act from the two leads (I hated it when suddenly credits …

One had to be surprised at how much heart this had and less blood. Tommy Riordan (Hardy) visits his father, Paddy (Nolte), a recovering alcoholic who has become a Christian and a bitter relationship. His father has trained him in the field of wrestling as a kid, so Tommy asks for his help in a Sparta winner take all in which they call the biggest MMA tournament assembled. A physics teacher, Brendan Conlon (Edgerton), enlists in the same tournament to pay for his home which is about to be foreclosed.

Screenplay and performances were impressive. Lines from the film include: Principal Joe - “We just pray to God he’s in a good mood.” Brendan – “I got a little problem.” “Time’s not an issue.” “Everything I do is for them.” Paddy – “Hope you can find it a …

Warrior is Oscar bound

If you’ve seen the previews for ‘Warrior’, you may have already decided that if you aren’t a big fan of UFC and/or Mixed Martial Art fighting, this movie isn’t for you. Don’t make that mistake. There’s a much deeper storyline here, and it’s absolutely worth your time to experience it.

THE GOOD: I am not by any stretch of imagination a fan of fighting as entertainment; if my husband only had a dollar for every time I’ve walked out of the room when he was watching UFC….but this movie is just so much more than a modern day Rocky. The story centers around two brothers, Brendan and Tommy, whose lives have taken completely opposite directions, after a wretchedly dysfunctional childhood leaves them estranged from their father—and each other. Both find themselves …
