"Devil" by Yojimbo

Five strangers are trapped in a lift and when one of the occupants is attacked it becomes increasingly obvious that there is a killer in their midst. Based on a story by M. Night Shyamalan, Devil is a hokey supernatural chiller that successfully uses paranoia and suspense to beef up a rather slight and silly premise. A little like a satanic Phone Booth, the occupants are coached by a watching detective as he desperately tries to save them before time runs out and at 75 minutes, it's economically told with a minimum of fuss. It's the kind of film that could've been a total dud in the wrong hands, but thanks to some deft direction and creative photography it's actually an entertaining slice of Twilight Zone inspired nonsense that doesn't outstay its welcome.
