Paradises is just a myth. Two teenage daughters push their father to his limit when they reveal their mother was having an affair before she had an accident. The best way to describe George Clooney's character, His a good man with a lot of things on his hands, He makes foolish choices but he tries to be a good man, But his older daughter who his like another side to him, She tells him to take action and beat up the guy he made they life's living hell, But he just can't and there is one scene when his at his wife's funeral and he stays calm and tries his best not to cry, But when the people leave and his all alone he drops to the ground on his knees pressing his hands together on the ground and his heading is facing the ground and the camera goes around him and then he lifts his head up …

Almost Paradise

Alexander Payne is a great director - and not just because he happens to be a native Nebraskan. He manages two feats I wouldn't have though possible: he makes George Clooney seem like a regular guy and he gives Matthew Lillard a dramatic role that actually works. Based on those two things alone, The Descendants is worth a watch.
What I like is that the story doesn't feel forced. Clooney plays a father and husband - his wife is in a coma following a boating accident and he is having trouble with how to deal with his two daughters (played with perfection by Shailene Woodley and Amara Miller). On top of this, his extended family is putting together a deal to sell a pristine parcel of Hawaiian land that has been in the family for generations in a multimillion dollar deal.
Then things …

An enjoyable film but no oscar contender

Well normally after sitting through the sleepfest known as 'Michael Clayton' I normally wouldnt touch another Clooney film with a 10 ft pole! However i recently 'broke the ice' with 'Up In The Air' that itself wasn't bad which had me then thinking 'he can do an ok film' Well i decided to give 'The Descendants' a shot mostly due to the oscar buzz surrounding the film at the time. Anyways i always make a thing of going to see all nominated films around Oscar night. Not a bad film rather nowhere near an Oscar contender in my books, storyline although mostly depressing throughout had me 'hooked' 'till the end although no tears were shed by either myself nor my wife.

The Descendants

The Descendants is not a movie to watch as an escape or to be entertained. It is suffocatingly real with subjects of death, marital discord, and disconnection from a wife and two daughters. George Clooney shows a great range of acting ability in this movie. The scenery of the Hawaiian islands is breathtaking. The movie is quiet and not in a great hurry to make a point.
The sombering conclusion I arrived by the end credits is that life can be difficult and not at all what a person is planning anywhere on Earth, even in the paradise of the Hawaiian Islands.
I strongly suggest renting this movie before purchasing. It is fine to watch once, but it is not something for repeated viewings...unless one is just trying to spend two hours feeling depressed.

The Descendants review

Matt King (George Clooney) is a lawyer who controls acres of land in who takes care of his wife Elizabeth. Elizabeth is in a comatose from an accident and both have children, a 10-year-old Scottie (Amara Miller) and 17-year-old Alex (Shailene Woodley). Alex informs her father about an affair while Matt discovers the person responsible was Brian Speer (Matthew Lillard). Score was repetitive and humor was not that incorporated. Performances especially Clooney were remarkable and sincere. Cinematography brought out the beauty of the island.
Screenplay included the following quotes: Alexandra – “I've been doing really well, actually. Nobody ever seems to notice that.” Matt - “Are they insane? Do they think we're immune to life? How can they possibly think our families are …

Exceeded Expectations Given the Subject Matter

So this movie is nominated for Best Drama for a Golden Globe. And it's a pretty dang good one. I wouldn't say it is an amazing movie, but it is at least deserving of some of the praise.
Story: The story matter is not all that interesting. This is mostly why I gave it such a low grade. How it is told is a little better. But really where it shines is the character development and how they shape the complete plot. I still liked it, but wasn't blown away.
Cinematography: There are some amazing shots of Hawaii and some more realistic shots (think big city). I like how they portrait Hawaii less as a paradise and more as a home. This is the first I had seen this. Each shot is is set up with the characters in mind. Yeah it looks standard from the outside looking in. But Payne is very …
