A restyled version.

“Make him more tactical. Let's go with black.”
A remake of "Robocop" and we get this whole debate again. Was this remake really necessary ? Was the audience really waiting for this ? Does it add anything valuable to the original version? Does it equal the original version or is it just a pale shadow ? In my opinion this is again a needless and unnecessary discussion. Meanwhile we are already at the next "The Amazing Spiderman". "Superman" also has taken his cape out of the closet a number of times. And another "Godzilla" is ready to hit the theaters. Nobody is making a fuss about that. But oops, they are going to make a reboot of "Robocop". A 27 year old cult movie. A timeless classic that had great impact in all areas. An ultra-hard SF with explicit violent scenes, infused with …

"Robocop" by Yojimbo

A detective who suffered horrific injuries from an attempt on his life is transformed into a cyborg by a multinational corporation intent on introducing robotic weaponry into the police force. The original Robocop was seminal science fiction laced with social commentary and served up with a wide streak of black humour, and true to form this pointless remake takes the body of the original story and eviscerates it in order to replace everything that made it good with soulless, generic, computer generated production line mediocrity. The dark humour that was the essence of the original film is all but gone with only Samuel L. Jackson's media propagandist, who is but a stepping stone away from the denizens of the real Fox News, making any attempt at providing the incisive wit of the idea. The …

Hopefully a one and done reboot

This had the chance to be a great update to a classic 80's movie but fell short. They put together a decent cast and I actually enjoyed most of the changes to the main character. Two big problems, it's rated PG-13 and the ending. Michael Keaton was never a believable bad guy. No fault on the actor, the script did a poor job of moving him from CEO wanting to improve the world to crazy business guy trying to cover his ass. The special effects were good, but the loss of some of the cheese from the original made it feel like a very generic action flick at times.
They tried to play up the political angle in this one saying that the rest of the world was better off due to the US using drones for security and America was in disarray because they were not. Yet Detroit looks like a clean, well …

Another Lame Remake

Another needless remake of a memorable genre 'classic'. I LOVE the original RoboCop. One of my all-time favorite movies. This new, shinier 'RoboCop' doesn't try to emulate anything from it's predecessor, which is sometimes a good thing for remakes. That does bring about one good aspect in this update: the social commentary on drone warfare. This, surprisingly, is the only good part of the film and it's the actual driving force of the story. The political gray area of morals is handled believable within the confines of the movie's plot. However, it beats the message over our heads hoping that we'll get it. The intentions are so plainly obvious right from the first scene that the repetition felt like I was being talked down to. More subtlety would've worked. The supporting cast …

Underwhelm me, I dare you RoboCop.

If I were judging this film solely by its action and direction, I would say it is more than impressive, amazing, in fact. But, good action does not exactly equal to a good movie, so I must also pay respects (or disrespects) to the writing.
To start out, I must admit that I am not a big fan of the original RoboCop. It's good 1980's action fluff, but it isn't a standout in the action genre, at least to me.
And just like with Total Recall two years ago, they made another remake of a popular cult action flick, but not as good. Seeing the recreated scenes and lines was entertaining, I must admit, but the rest just wasn't meant to be made.
I must say I was very impressed by how this film began. It is easy to tell that the makers wanted to outclass the original, to make a more developed …
