"If you destroy their history, you destroy their achievements and it's as if they never existed."
"The Monuments men" is a boring movie. Thank God there were people during the 2nd World War who were concerned about the cultural heritage and with a selfless commitment went to the battlefields of Nazi Germany to recover the looted artworks. It's a story based on true events, but I still doubt if it was necessary to make a film about those events. In "The Guns of Navarone" they gathered a commando to destroy those damn huge cannons. In "Saving Private Ryan" a group of soldiers got orders to look for a certain Ryan (of course) whose brothers been killed on the battlefield. In "The Monuments Men" some old aged connoisseurs of art, sacrifice themselves to find stolen artworks. …

"The Monuments Men" by Yojimbo

A team of art historians is sent to the allied front in the latter stages of WW2 to try and recover the art treasures looted by the Nazis before they are either destroyed or appropriated by the advancing Russian army. The idea behind The Monuments Men had a lot of potential as drama about the ideology of the Nazis and their book burning, cultural appropriation and their treatment of the Jews as a disposable commodity to be exploited and exterminated. Disappointingly, the light hearted tone eviscerates any opportunity for serious, thought provoking commentary and the events of the war are used as little more than a backdrop, producing something that resembles a cross between Ocean's Eleven and Dad's Army. Despite an excellent cast, each of the characters are given little screen time …

It is always such a pity when something that had the utmost potential to be great suddenly misses the mark, and for me, The Monuments Men has nothing to show for itself other than being an insulting joke in poor taste.
Nothing is worse in a war movie than a story that doesn't even take war seriously. Inglourious Basterds was already treading on thin ice, but it gave a lot of people a certain satisfaction, myself included. This film, though, this is something else. It is an extra-comfortable, jingoistic parody of itself, and frankly, too much for my patience.
From the introduction to the main execution to the conclusion this film spews one bad line and one badly written scene after the other.
The characters are given their five minutes of what I guess would be considered …

likeable cast but forgetable movie

A pretty average film about a group of soldiers with the task of getting back the art that hitler has been hiding and stealing during the war. with george cloony and a group of other fine actors its hard not to like it.
But there is something missing in this movie. none seem like people who are that interested in art for a start. and there lacks any real togetherness between the characters. none of it rings true and not much happens really..
also its very corny in places , very american and old fashioned in its portrale the kind of cornyness i hoped hollywood would stop making.
There is a bit of wit and humour though in places and like i said its hard not to like due to the actors involved but its not a very good film. iit doesn't seem to know what it wants to be. whether to be light …

Monuments Men review

Lt. Frank Stokes (Clooney) recruits Lt. James Granger (Damon), Sgt. Richard Campbell (Murray), Sgt. Walter Garfield (Goodman), Pvt. Preston Savitz Balaba), Lt. Donald Jeffries and Lt. Jean Claude Clermont to rescue precious artworks sequestered by the Nazi's. Starts of slow then picks up after the team gets close and somewhat leaves you wanting for more after the conclusion. Insufficient character history for the squad with the exception of Granger and Stokes. Highlights were the sequences of the hilarious and at times emotional tandem of Preston and Campbell, Stokes speech for the men before they start the mission and discovering the last art works in which the Russians were equally interested in. It had humor, a little bit of drama and action which makes it an entertaining watch. …

The Art of War

Is Monuments Men the movie I was hoping it would be? No - there are plenty of issues with George Clooney's film about a group of non-soldiers who are formed with the task of preventing the destruction of the world's precious art as WWII comes to close. But for all the faults, Monuments Men is still an interesting look into this period of time - especially those who find the value in protecting our historic heritage.
Although Monuments Men was not embraced by critics, it had a much more warm welcome to general audiences. I can see the issues - none of the characters are given much of a backstory or development. We learn just enough about each one that they each standout - but some would say not enough about any one of them to care too much about what happens. I would counter that …
