How do you even start to evaluate "Birdman?" It's definitely the weirdest movie on the list of Best Picture winners. It's excellent cast and masterful cinematography make this comedy an original experience.

Edward Norton was a joy to watch in his every scene, but he disappeared about halfway through the movie and was replaced by the bird-manifestation-of-Michael Keaton's-thoughts, who was way less interesting. I can see why members of the Academy are into this movie, but for a writer, it was puzzling to see how Raymond Carver was used in the story. The characters in the movie seem to regard him as this lone, untouchable genius who gives meaning to their own struggles... And yet the one thing everyone knows about Carver is that all his best work is the result of an unhappy collaboration. For me, the spirit of Gordon Lish haunted the whole movie, but I wasn't sure if that was intentional or not.
