"Doctor Sleep," however ambitious, is a long laborious followup that never strikes the chords of true terror "The Shining" did. It gets nowhere fast, giving me more than enough time to think maybe it didn't need to be connected to it in the first place.

Mike Flanagan walks a tight line between adapting Stephen King's sequel (one of the few he's written) and the iconic Stanley Kubric film (which King has never hidden his disdain for). While I felt the movie did drag at points, the casting was spot on and, overall, got things right. Kudos for Jacob Tremblay's small yet terrifying role and for one helluva finale.

It's weird that this film reminds me of The Haunting of Hill House more than The Shining. I sense Mike Flanagan's tentativeness in this one. The film could not decide whether to be subtle or deliberate in referencing the 1980 film. I feel like its obsession to make everything be visually represented especially on portraying The True Knot was critical because, at some point, its surrealistic images reminded me of Inception which is far from what could be more effective depiction of a haunted mind that could not be explained and barely "photographable". Overall, it was a decent watch. I just wished Flanagan created a straight up adaptation of the novel without being bothered by the 1980 film.
