Tarantino on thin ice.

I think I've discussed Inglourious Basterds around a thousand times.

This is a very peculiar movie from my perspective, because although it is at times fascinating and Tarantino gold, it also has its weak moments.
Quentin Tarantino is one of my favorite directors. And the way I see his style, he always makes one of two movies. One: An extremely smart, twisted, dialogue-filled and cool movie like Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs, or Two: he makes an extremely disgusting movie and gets lost in his little universe, like at the end of Django Unchained or in Kill Bill: Volume One.

Inglourious Basterds is honestly a good balance of those two signature Tarantino styles. I personally adore the tension-filled basement bar scene and the introduction, but I also have some severe issues.

My Favorite Movie of All Time

This is not the greatest movie ever made, it isn't even Tarantino's greats; but this is my favorite movie of all time. It is the most fun and thrilling movie I have ever seen. Every aspects of this job was perfect and well thought out down to costume design. Pitt was hilarious and brilliant in his role as Lt. Aldo Raine but is heavily overshadowed by one of the best performances I have seen on screen in a long time, given by Christoph Waltz. The sheer brilliance of it all is captivating and exciting. It has a dark comic book goofiness to it, especially with characters Hugo Stiglets and The Bear Jew. The entire theater scene is magnificently done. It was drawn up and executed perfectly.

--Spoiler-- When the massacre began in the theatre with the screaming, the burning, the laughter of …

"Inglourious Basterds" by Yojimbo

Quentin Tarantino returns with the story of the Basterds, a group of Jewish soldiers performing guerilla warfare and terror tactics behind enemy lines to strike fear into the hearts of German soldiers during World War II. Inglourious Basterds is a very difficult film to pigeonhole. It's part Jewish revenge fantasy, part gung ho war film, part knowing parody of patriotic flag wavers and 100% Tarantino. His trademark patchwork of styles and references is as evident as ever; the opening scenes are pure Leone, turns into The Dirty Dozen and then zig zags off on tangents all over the place. It's impossible not to enjoy a film with this premise (unless you are a closet Fourth Reicher or member of the BNP) and Brad Pitt's hilarious send up of a hick war hero is almost as good as Christoph …

Inglourious Basterds review

Has one of the best antagonists onscreen. A team called The Basterds hunt down Nazi's who are tasked to eliminate Jews. SD Colonel Hans Landa (Christoph Waltz) is definitely a genius in interrogations. 1st Special Service Force First Lieutenant Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt) was able to recruit 8 Jewish American soldiers to be in his team. The script was clever and the cinematography and camera angles were impressive. So many tragic scenes and yet the humor never dwindled. Shades of Reservoir Dogs was present in the bar scene with the “Mexican standoff” which involves Lieutenant Archie Hicox (Michael Fassbender) the Basterds and German film actress and British spy, Bridget von Hammersmark (Diane Kruger). The downfall of Hitler and the German's consist of a movie theater, a couple of …

Tarrentino is simply amazing.

He may not be dishing out one blockbuster after another, releasing one off-beat movie inside one decade (in which Cinema and tastes transition from one generation to the next)... But when he DOES display his art, it is pure, unbridled joy. That is what it needs to be cherished for. No more no less. Such is the tale of Inglourious Basterds. It was to me his best work after Pulp Fiction. And to the the connoisseur of his works, this movie too grows on you with each successive viewing. Like Pulp Fiction, Inglourious Basterds, deep down, really has no plot. And like the former, the plot just doesn't matter, as the thrill in the movie lies in the dialogues and chemistry between the actors during (seemingly) mundane bits of smalltalk. However, unlike Pulp Fiction, this movie delivers a first. …

Good First Impression, Great Lasting Impression

The following review was written the day after watching the movie. In the following months and repeated viewings later, Inglourious Basterds has grown on me to be one of the best movies of 2009.

Quentin Tarantino's latest film, the long-awaited Inglourious Basterds, is here, and with it comes mighty expectations from his fan boys. Unfortunately, Basterds is Tarantino's weakest film to date - though that doesn't mean it's bad. Well-written and expertly crafted, Inglourious Basterds is an effective film; it's just not the off-the-wall war epic one would expect.

It's not surprising that Tarantino's version of a war film is one built around character and dialogue, not around violence and action. Even his most action-packed of films - Kill Bill, Vol. 1 - hinged on strong, …

And the Best Picture is...

Not Avatar, the Hurt Locker or Precious. Hands down, the Best Picture of 2009 was Quentin Tarantino's Inglorious Basterds. While a movie about World War II being nominated for Best Picture is like the San Diego Chargers making the playoffs (always there, but never winning), Inglorious Basterds speaks volumes about the film medium as a form of art and commercial entity. It also casts a new light on the historical film genre, how stories are told and the cinematic joys we can look forward to as long as filmmakers try to make water-cooler talkers actually say something.

Inglorious Basterds is a period piece set during WWII that contains as much historical accuracy as this sentence. But within that freedom, the film tells a story that is more cinematic than history. While many historical …

Tarantino's self described masterpiece.

Ichabod Crane - wrote on 12/30/2009

I find this to be Tarantino's best movie. It doe shave his dialogue as usual but this time it is never annoyingly intrusive like it can be in some of his other movies such as the Madonna speech in reservoir dogs and the pot belly speech in pulp fiction. Here the dialogue and the plot interact well to create a very satisfying picture with many interesting characters and some great scenes. The plot is incredibly interesting and I was fascinated to follow through the whole thing. After a rewatch of it it slows slightly involving a series of three scenes involving the character Shoshanna that slowdown the film slightly but not enough to harm every other scene that all work incredibly well. I did not mind the history rewrite since I know the history it more of made it a interesting twist …

Inglourious Basterds

This flim takes place in Nazi occupied France where a young Jewish refugee Shosanna Dreyfus witnesses the slaughter of her family by Colonel Hans Landa as they are hiding underneath the floorboards of a French dairy farmers home. Narrowly escaping with her life, she plots her revenge. In the meantime, there is a group of Jewish "guerrilla fighters", (The Inglourious Basterds) who search and destroy any Nazi they can find. We are privy to some of their exploits. Several years later German war hero Fredrick Zoller takes an interest in Shoshana and involves her in a having a film debut at the movie theater she now owns. With the promise of every major Nazi officer in the high command (including Hitler) in attendance, the event catches the attention of the "Basterds", a group of …
