A frustrating and uninspired trudge through a fantasy I didn't care to know the outcome of, "Lady in the Water" lures you in with promises of vision and whimsy only to let you down with a boring vanity project that has neither of those things. That's the REAL twist.

This is a masterpiece of vanity and ineptitude. The shots are terribly blocked, the acting is so stilted a deer with a car headlight shone in its face could do better, and M. Night Shyamalan has a major supporting role as the messiah.

I was very excited when I first saw the trailers for this film. That excitement quickly turned to disappointment. I felt like...laughing. I wasn't scared, creeped out, there was no tension...it was very laughable. Simply because the characters seemed to take themselves WAY too seriously...and doing so while doing things like finding secret codes on a cereal box. Awful movie.

Originally a bed-time story written for Shyamalan's daughter, "Lady in the Water" is an excellently-crafted fairy-tale with a great modern twist. Paul Giamatti was superb (as he normally is) as the leading role to this sometimes terrifying fractured tale about a lady who magically appears at the apartment complex pool with tenants who seem like they're from another dimension. A well-executed twist and a completely charming story all-around, "Lady in the Water" is a far-cry better than most modern fairy tale films made today.

I wasn't expecting to like this, probably because I was misled by the trailers and promotional material into thinking it was supposed to be a badly-conceived horror film. It's not: it's a whimsical flight of fancy and a lighthearted mystery to be worked through with an entertaining cast of characters. Very enjoyable.

I'm sad that so few people got this movie. Its a fairly tale its suppose to be silly! Shyamalan based it on the story he used to tell his children before bed (hopefully it was a less scary version). If you keep an open mind I think you might really enjoy this movie about a group of misfits trying to help the mysterious lady in the water.

A clever, though often unintentionally hilarious effort to combine reality with myth. As with any other M. Night Shyamalan project, there is more than meets the eye and mind and plenty to read in between the lines. A fair effort with a good cast. Final Grade: C+

A terrible terrible movie. I would avoid this, because it's stupid.
