Not a Darabont classic

I think they should change the title of this movie to "Lost in the Supermarket with the Mist outside". That would have been much more appropriate than its current title. If you have seen the TV series "Lost" then you'll be surprised how much resemblance this movie has to that show. Instead of being trapped in an island, the castaways or rather customers are trapped in a supermarket. The only difference I see is that there are no Koreans and a fat guy in that store. Another one is the psycho-religious lady, which from the get go I want to strangle. But then soon we would all would feel the ultimate satisfaction upon seeing her fate in the end of the movie. And what about Thomas Jane, I think the guy cannot act scared. One last thing I like is the ending, which is a mark of a true horror …

Something in the mist...

One of my favorite short stories by Stephen King, I have to say I was pretty suprised at how much I liked this movie - to a point. It's basic plot is a group of people trapped in a supermarket due to a strange mist outside that harbors unworldly creatures. It's creepy at the right times, the characters are engaging, and it's a decent story. I really liked the cast, particularly Marcia Gay Harden as the local nutjob whose religous prechings start to ring true, and Thomas Jane as the reluctant hero (which so many of these movies have to have). However, the end did me in. While King's story ends very ambiguosly, director Frank Darabount chose a more specific end - and I didn't like it. Unfortunately movies in this genre now think they have to have some "twist" ending to get the …

Chills Inside and Outside The Mist

Adapting Stephen King novels to the big screen has always been a hit or miss proposition – mostly miss. However, one man who has had success with the master of horror has been Frank Darabont, scoring a knockout with The Shawshank Redemption and a noble attempt with The Green Mile. One thing that both of those have in common is that neither of them is an actual horror story from King. The Mist, on the other hand, is supposed to be scary.

Darabont proves that he can do horror – especially tension and suspense – with the same emotion he gave The Shawshank Redemption. The horrors in this story are twofold: there are the monsters trying to get to a group of people trying to survive, then there are the real monsters – the survivors themselves. It’s not a new concept – a diverse …

The new ending is just one of the many setbacks

The film is filled with all the typical horror movie conventions, especially the ones King has helped to create. There are echoes here of many of his other works, most notably STORM OF THE CENTURY. For quite some time, the viewer goes along with it; it is a horror movie after all. These sorts of things are to be expected. But as the film goes on, these characters prescribe more and more to typical stupid people behavior that instantly spells doom. Instead of running away from the creatures, they stand and stare in terror for far too long. When a character makes a revelation that some creatures are attracted to light, what happens? A panicked person turns on all the lights. And let’s not forget the completely implausible explanations that do not mesh with the film at all.

Yet when …

Like the best episodes of The Twilight Zone

I'll admit it. I love every movie Frank Darabont has done. And yes, that includes The Majestic. Hate all you want. There is just something about Darabont that I can't quite put my finger on, but to me he's great. Although I'm pretty sure that a lot of people who liked his other movies will hate this one.

The Mist is one of the best horror movies I've seen in ages. Don't get confused though. This isn't horror in the vein of slasher movies, j-horror films, or torture horror. This is a good old fashioned monster movie that just so happens to be a look at how people react when bad and unexplainable things happen. The Mist most resembles a Twilight Zone episode. If you're a fan of The Twilight Zone then you know that's not a bad thing.

The Mist is based on a Stephen King novella and it …
