Review - Planet of the Apes (2001)

While trying to save his chimp from a death in space, Captain Leo Davidson (Mark Wahlberg) was hurled through time and space to a strange land where humans were slaves for apes. Now, along with an apes Ari (Helena Bonham Carter) and Limbo (Paul Giamatti) and a human named Daena (Estella Warren), he is trying to find his way home in “Planet of the Apes.”
I want so much place sole blame for this movie on Fox, but I can’t help but wondering why director Tim Burton took the job in the first place. The whole concept of even making this remake was a travesty from the start, but the end result wasn’t a complete disaster.
For instance, the acting is true Burton quality. He can always get his actors to do exactly what he wants them to. The acting seems choreographed, and I wonder …

Not bad, but not one I would rush out to see again

The "hero" (Wahlberg), a highly trained and professional astronaut, blatantly disobeys his commanding officer to rescue a space monkey. After being sucked into a convenient local time warp that just happens to appear outside the space station. The hero crashes his tiny space pod on some strange planet, without getting a scratch on him. He gets out and immediately runs into some oppressed humans being chased by leaping killer apes. The hero becomes a slave, escapes, and finds his pretty space station has crashed on the planet and all of his friends are dead.
Over all it was a quickly hashed remake, there were some good scenes, and Helena Bonham Carter, Tim Roth, and Mark Wahlberg and did an impressive job over all in making the movie work. Unfortunately there wasn't much in the way of …
